The Kenya Coast

Here at Tribes we have decided that we need an update on the properties on the Kenyan coast.  It’s fallen to me to make the sacrifice and head out to the Indian Ocean – what a pity!

So March it is for a trip to Lamu and Manda Islands, Mombasa, Diani & Galu Beach areas, and a side trip to see Tsavo East.

There are so many wonderful places to stay on the coast now, and of course they change all the time.  I should manage to see about 15-20 properties during this trip including some of our favourites, such as:

Kipungani Explorer  – a remote rustic resort on Lamu.
Diamond Beach – a budget beach stop on Manda Island.
Pinewood Beach Resort – on the mainland’s Galu Beach. Good value, friendly lodge.
AfroChic – a small boutique hotel near Diani.

If you’re considering a trip to the Kenya coast, we do already know many of the properties very well, so please do ask if you’d like advice. Of course after March, we will simply be all the more in-the-know!

In terms of the best time to come to the Kenya Coast, well you probably want to avoid the rainiest times. The rains start in about mid-April and pretty well continue throughout May and into June – sometimes into July.  On the whole, most of the lodges will be open after the rains by at least mid-July (sometimes earlier).

If you’re reading this and would like to have some personal feedback about any places I’m going to see, by all means let me know and I’ll get in touch with you on my return.
